Artist Interview Series: Cookie Moon

08 Aug 2025

Part of an ongoing series of interviews delving into the artists, designers and thinkers & doers of our time.

1. Where are you based and how is it shaping you?

For the past year and a half, I have been leading a nomadic life. One suitcase, half filled with clothes and half with pastels, has traveled with me from one sublet to another, across cities and islands around the world. Each new place inspired me to capture its essence through simplicity, food, objects, landscapes, and the people I met along the way

Now I have settled and found home in Brooklyn, NY, but I often visit my mother, who lives in the Greek island of Paros. The contrast between the high pace of NYC and the tranquility of the Cycladic island, as well as the Geographical distance, is inspiring to me. They are opposites, and almost complete each other to make a whole experience of life.

2. Which book is on your bedside table?

I’m currently reading No One Belongs Here More Than You by Miranda July. I’m a huge fan of short stories, short films, and compilations, and the title speaks to me right now. The question of belonging feels especially relevant to me and to many people around me.

3. What social accounts do you keep returning back to?

I follow Michael McGregor’s work closely. There’s something authentic, free, and fun about how he looks at the world, paints it, and lives his life. His lines are rough, his palette is bright, and his subjects capture the feeling of a star drifting between beloved places, especially the beloved Greece <–> USA route.

4. Favourite piece of art?

In the end, it’s always a Matisse.

5. What song have you got on repeat?

‘Little Boy’ by Brian Eno and Beatie Wolfe. It’s the beginning of winter and I like listening to the low, slow ambient sounds with Beatie’s beautiful voice as I walk around New York in the rain.

6. The biggest life lesson you have learnt?

This is a cliché, but after living in so many sublets and having no real sense of ground, I learnt that home is within you.

7. One person that inspires you?

I am always and forever inspired by the very talented musician Josef Laimon, who is also my brother. Not only by his unique approach to his craft, meticulous care for detail in his work, and angelic voice, but also for always pushing himself to step out of his comfort zone, to learn new things, and to constantly work on becoming a better artist and a better person.

8. Do you have anything exciting you’re currently working on?

I am writing a book!

9. Next place on your travel wish list?

Next spring I will be traveling to Chios, Greece, to participate in the Descover Artists Residency. I have always dreamed of combining my work with my love for Greek islands, so I am extremely excited to take part in the program.

10. What do you think about the state of advertising?

I think everybody is trying to sell something, and social media has made it much easier to do so. From artists to small businesses and huge corporations, everything has meshed into quick visuals and catchy songs. I'm most excited by anything that feels new, not like anything I've seen before.
