Artist Interview Series: Kennedy Mirema

04 Feb 2025

Part of an ongoing series of interviews delving into the artists, designers and thinkers & doers of our time.

1. Where are you based and how is it shaping you?

I’m currently based in Nairobi, Kenya. Living here has profoundly shaped my perspective and creative direction. Nairobi is an expressive city, a melting pot of diverse cultures, styles, and stories, with an undeniable energy that fuels my work. The city’s juxtaposition of modernity and tradition constantly inspires me to explore the intersection of heritage and contemporary narratives in my projects.

I spend most of my time either immersed in creative work—styling, directing, or conceptualizing projects—or connecting with Nairobi’s artistic community. The local creative scene, with its boldness and authenticity, deeply influences my aesthetic and vision. It reminds me to embrace my roots, especially as I dig deeper into Kenyan culture, and to present this identity unapologetically in my work.

Nairobi’s pulse is a reminder of resilience and innovation, shaping my global outlook. It’s why I hope to start collaborating more across the African continent—to build a dialogue that centers African narratives on a global stage.

2. Which book is on your bedside table?

Byredo Bal d'Afrique is currently my favourite. This magazine is Ben Gorham’s, the founder of Byredo, heartfelt tribute to Africa, focusing on its rich cultural influence in shaping dance, art, and music through time, all woven into the idea of an imagined event. It’s a beautiful exploration of Africa's impact on the world, and I’m so proud to have played a role in bringing one of the projects featured in it to life.

3. What social accounts do you keep returning back to?

I’m working on disconnecting from social media, focusing more on reading books and drawing inspiration from the real world around me. I find that immersing myself in physical spaces, culture, and meaningful interactions helps me reconnect with my creative process. That said, I still use Instagram occasionally for small updates and to stay informed on trends and events in the world. It’s a balance between staying present and keeping a pulse on what's happening.

4. Favourite piece of art?

Right now, I’m so immersed in my work that it feels like my favorite piece of art. It’s constantly evolving, with each project bringing new inspiration and challenges. Whether it’s fashion, photography, or creative direction, the process itself is what excites me most at this moment. It’s all about being fully present and engaged in what I'm creating, and that’s where I find the most meaning and inspiration. Though, for my all-time inspiration, I love “Cidade de Deus”, a film directed by Fernando Meirelles and Kátia Lund, it will always remain a gem in my list.

5. What song have you got on repeat?

Life of the Party’ by Kanye West & Andre 3000 for sure. I really vibe with how Kanye & Andre mix different moods in this music—it’s got this raw honesty and self-expression that mirrors how I approach both my work and life. Whether I’m deep in a project, brainstorming, or just chilling, the track always grounds me and gives me a boost of energy.

6. The biggest life lesson you have learnt?

You can’t understand—just see.

I used to think I had to understand everything, like why my phone always dies at the worst possible moment or how socks disappear into another dimension. But here’s the thing—I’ve come to realize that life isn’t meant to be figured out. Sometimes, you just gotta watch things go down, roll with it, and laugh when it doesn’t make sense. Why stress? Just see what's happening, enjoy the chaos, and let the universe do its thing. Understanding? Nah, I’ll take a rain check.

7. One person that inspires you?

Of course my mom! —her resilience, wisdom, and strength shape how I approach life. Her example influences my values, creativity, and relationships. She teaches me how love, understanding, and resilience can truly transform everything.

I’m also deeply inspired by my friends and team at 199xOrg. The bond we share is rare, and I’m grateful to have such incredible people in my life.

8. Do you have anything exciting you’re currently working on?

I’m currently focusing on something personal, reconnecting with my younger self. It’s an exciting process. While I’m not able to share all the details at the moment, it’s an exciting journey, and I’m looking forward to unveiling more as things progress.

9. Next place on your travel wish list?

London and Cape Town, no doubt. Both cities have an incredible creative pulse, and I’m eager to experience their dynamic artistic scenes firsthand. I’m excited to explore a bit of their energy and relate it to my own perspective of inspiration. I believe this exploration will not only challenge me but also spark new directions for my artistic journey, without losing sight of my own voice.

10. What do you think about the state of advertising?

Advertising shapes culture and influences behavior, often pushing products and reinforcing societal ideals. However, authentic campaigns have the power to challenge norms and encourage thinking beyond consumerism. The industry could improve by prioritizing honesty, transparency in sustainability, and using its platform for positive change. Advertisers should carefully consider what they put out into the world rather than being solely driven by financial gain.
