Artist Interview Series: Max Manavi-Huber

25 Jul 2025

Part of an ongoing series of interviews delving into the artists, designers and thinkers & doers of our time.

1. Where are you based and how is it shaping you?

I am based in Vienna, Austria. I wouldn’t say it’s the most inspiring place to be honest, but it’s a great home base, especially with a family, as I have a 5-year-old. I am traveling a lot for work and pleasure and this is where I got most of my inspiration from.

2. Which book is on your bedside table?

I usually read multiple books at the same time, depending on my mood. Although Krishnamurti’s Think On These Things and Marcus Aurelius’s Meditations are constantly close by and probably my strongest influences.

3. What social accounts do you keep returning back to?

Instagram is the only account I use and I have to say, I mostly really like it. I have built many relationships around it, stay on track with people I don’t often get to see in person and draw inspiration from other creatives. I don’t spend a ton of time on it daily and wouldn’t say I have a problem with its addictive nature.

4. Favourite piece of art?

I wouldn’t say I have a favourite piece, but I am drawn to the works of Magnus Reid, Daniel Domig and Coulter Jacobs.

5. What song have you got on repeat?

At the moment a lot of Turnstile as I am still bummed I missed the show in Vienna. Apart from that my taste is quite broad, from classic Hip Hop to experimental Afro-Psychedelia.

6. The biggest life lesson you have learnt?

That surrendering to whatever life throws at you, is the only sane thing there is. Or as Eckhart Tolle says it: By choosing to accept it, you're essentially choosing to engage with it fully and without resistance, which can be a powerful catalyst for change and personal growth.

7. One person that inspires you?

My wife and my son: both for their unique traits, unwavering support and my son for teaching me every day to focus on what is truly important in life.

8. Do you have anything exciting you’re currently working on?

After a couple of quieter months and holiday season, I have a some exciting new projects I can’t tell much about at the moment and I will be releasing my new book and an accompanying exhibition in fall later this year.

9. Next place on your travel wish list?

I am going to Chamonix this late summer which I am very excited about. I will be shooting a personal project during the world famous UTMB Trail Running race and will have a solo retreat for a week to gain some perspective and insight.

10. What do you think about the state of advertising?

I feel lucky to say that my commercial projects usually entail a lot of artistic freedom and the people I get to work with are usually a fun bunch of like-minded creatives. As for the local advertising scene in Austria, I would say we could definitely use more creative and brave decision makers, but I work mostly internationally where I feel quite challenged with the projects I get to work on.
