Artist Interview Series: Yosef Phelan

08 Aug 2025

Part of an ongoing series of interviews delving into the artists, designers and thinkers & doers of our time.

1. Where are you based and how is it shaping you?

I'm currently based in Dublin, where I grew up. I moved back home after a period in London, and I'm really enjoying being so close to family again and the change of pace that comes with leaving a city like London. A good chunk of my work is influenced by my relationships to my family and home, and I think that aspect of my work has flourished since moving back.

2. Which book is on your bedside table?

I recently finished ‘Poor Artists’ by The White Pube (Gabrielle de la Puente & Zarina Muhammad) and absolutely loved it. I haven't read anything quite like it before, and would recommend it to any artist. Right now I'm reading ‘Lote’ by Shola von Reinhold, and ‘Perfection’ by Vincenzo Latronico - both of which I'm really enjoying.

3. What social accounts do you keep returning back to?

It’s not an account, but I find myself spending a lot of time on are.na. It's a great resource for compiling references, both visual and written. I also love exploring boards that other people have made, and often find unique references through it.

4. Favourite piece of art?

I really love Philip Guston's work, particularly the painting ‘Painter's Forms No. 2’. I saw his work in person last year and it really stuck with me. As well as loving the way he paints, I'm definitely inspired by how he wasn't afraid to change his style as an artist throughout his life.

5. What song have you got on repeat?

‘Bittersweet’ by an Irish band, Cliffords. They released an EP recently which I’ve been loving, and usually have it on while working.

6. The biggest life lesson you have learnt?

Learning to say no to things has been the hardest lesson to learn, but probably one of the most important. It's still a work in progress, but I think it's important to realise that you will inevitably let people down at some stage or another, and that doesn't necessarily make you a bad person.

7. One person that inspires you?

My family is my constant source of inspiration. My mum is my best friend and the most incredible person I know, and her selflessness, drive, and care for others inspires me everyday.

8. Do you have anything exciting you’re currently working on?

I'm working on a project about my dad and his life at the moment. It's something I've been chipping away at in the background for some time, and I'm excited to be able to flesh it out a bit more and give it the time it deserves.

9. Next place on your travel wish list?

I'd actually love to spend some time exploring Ireland a bit more. I've really enjoyed being home the past few months, and there's so much of Ireland I still haven't seen that I think is worth exploring.

10. What do you think about the state of advertising?

To me, a lot of advertising feels like clutter. I'm hyperconscious of what brands and people I'm supporting as a consumer at the moment, so I think no matter how impactful or widespread a campaign might be, I won't engage with it if the brands behind it don't align with my own values.
