Nick Clegg, Trump and Meta
03 Jan 2025
As Trump comes in, Nick Clegg steps down as President of Global Affairs at Meta. With the Republican Joel Kaplan stepping into his shoes.
Trump and Meta’s relationship has always been fraught.
Throwing Trump off the platform in 2021 to Trump threatening to imprison Zuckerberg if he interfered with the recent election. Calling Facebook the "enemy of the people”.
To now Zuckerberg alongside Bezos donating $1m to Trump’s inauguration fund, which is looking to be the biggest one yet. All with the hope to win the ear of the president-elect.
How will this change things like free speech on the platforms over the next 4 years?
The platforms have more power than most governments, the judge and jury for what is allowed.
You have one side feeling censored and the other feeling like a lot more should be done.
Combine that now with the added element of Musk involved in it all.
How will the platforms respond, how will advertisers respond, where will the money flow?
Or maybe it will simply come down to the proposed cage fight between Musk vs Zuckerberg.
2025 is going to be interesting...
